General Information

Job Description:

A journey level electrician is capable of installing, maintaining, and repairing all electrical systems for residential, commercial, and industrial jobs.
Salary Range: Minimum starting pay begins at $13.20 per hour with yearly increases. Also, benefits such as health insurance, dental insurance, and retirement are paid in addition to the hourly wage.
Prerequisites: Applicant must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and have at least one credit of high school algebra or equivalent.
Training Description: This is a national program, which is registered by the Department of Education through the Bureau of Apprenticeship and is VA approved. The apprentice has the unique opportunity to learn about the trade, and earn a decent salary at the same time. The training is two-fold: there is 8000 hours of on-the-job training and 1080 hours of related classroom training.
Program Length: Four years. Typically, the apprentice works 40 hours a week and attends school during the day.
Cost: Tuition free.  However, there is a nominal cost of $350 for books plus cost of  tools.
Classification: Journeyman Inside Wireman (term used to identify level of competency, not gender).
Selection: Applications are accepted year round. Typically, interviews are conducted in June and classes begin in July. All applications will be received without regards to race, color, age, religion, national origin or gender.
Future: The electrical construction industry is an ever changing field that is becoming more and more technical, and the demand for the services of a certified licensed electrician continues to increase.
